Problem :

Flocabulary subscriptions lacked visibility into usage and impact. Without meaningful data, administrators struggled to justify renewals. Teachers wanted more ways to expose students to vocabulary across diverse learning styles, but the product wasn’t showing clear outcomes or value. This gap limited retention, cross-sell opportunities, and the perceived worth of Flocabulary Plus and B2B subscriptions.

For students, vocabulary exercises only revealed performance on individual lessons, not growth over time. There were no patterns for teachers to identify where students were struggling, intervene effectively, or reinforce understanding with targeted practice. This left admins, teachers, and students without a complete picture of literacy progress.

Solution :

We designed a modular data dashboard tailored to both administrators and teachers.

  • Administrators could view district-wide data and drill down into schools and grade levels. This visibility revealed which schools or teachers showed limited vocabulary progress, enabling admins to intervene with actionable guidance on how to integrate Flocabulary more effectively.

  • Teachers gained class- and student-level insights, with proficiency grouped into high, medium, and low categories. The dashboard automatically generated targeted practice: flashcard exercises, videos, and even a customized vocabulary game where students built beats for every correct fill-in-the-blank response. As students completed exercises, their literacy levels adjusted in real time, creating a living feedback loop for growth.

This dual experience aligned stakeholders around a shared goal — reinforcing vocabulary acquisition and making literacy progress tangible across classrooms and districts.

Challenge :

The main challenge was translating raw vocabulary activity into meaningful growth insights without overwhelming users. Literacy development is nuanced, and incomplete datasets (e.g., schools adopting mid-year) risked skewing results.

To address this, we rigorously tested with each user group. Administrators provided feedback on district and school-level insights, helping refine data hierarchy and drill-down flows. Teachers validated how proficiency levels (high, medium, low) should be displayed and how actionable the auto-generated practice prompts felt. For students, we tested vocabulary practice prompts and the gamified experience to ensure engagement, clarity, and a smooth feedback loop that reinforced learning.

This multi-level testing gave us a deeper understanding of user needs and informed refinements that made the system clear, actionable, and engaging for all audiences.

Another key challenge was ensuring scalability. Since Flocabulary and Nearpod share component libraries, the Flocabulary dashboard became a foundation for modular components later reused in Nearpod’s Reports Dashboard. This unified approach reinforced consistency across both products and accelerated development efficiency.

Summary :

The Flocabulary Impact Dashboard gave administrators, teachers, and students the clarity they needed to see and act on vocabulary growth. For admins, it enabled informed renewal decisions and district-wide interventions. For teachers, it offered actionable tools to target classes and individuals with practice and games. For students, it turned practice into progress through interactive reinforcement.

Designed to be modular, scalable, and engaging, the project not only added value to Flocabulary Plus and B2B subscriptions but also improved adoption and renewal rates while boosting measurable student literacy outcomes. Beyond Flocabulary, it set the groundwork for Nearpod’s broader reporting ecosystem — ensuring consistency, reusability, and impact across both products.
